Welcome at Toul Ampil Project

A warm hello from our director, Kakada Chhim, Founder and Director

“When I was a child, I had a strong desire to learn English education but my family could not afford to pay for this privilege. I vowed to some-day help other children in Choueng Ek village who had the same misfortune. In 2001 I began renting Toul Ampil public school to start English tutoring for poor children in my village. I am very proud to offer language lessons to these children who are eager to learn but could otherwise not afford this opportunity. Thank you for your support!”

Cambodia’s youth, a future light from a dark past

Cambodia is an exotic land of lush jungles, tropical weather, and an ancient culture. Sadly, until 1998, it was plagued by 30 years of civil war including four years of genocide under the Khmer Rouge. Cambodia was slow to recover from the devastation of war. Rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure was nearly impossible since the educated class had been executed. Today, many tourists drive down a bumpy dirt road to the Choueng Ek Genocide Center where mass graves lay evidence to the horrors of the past. Along the same dirt road, hundreds of Children run and bicycle to attend Toul Ampil English School, evidence of a brighter future.

Our School and Program

Toul Ampil English School is a non-profit after-school program in Choueng Ek village, 25 minutes from Phnom Penh. The facility is a private school building we rent from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Poor students and monks from local villages are provided free English classes, pencils, and notebooks. Students also have access to a small library. Currently, we have about 250 students.

Our teachers and volunteers

Young Khmers age 18-25 are provided a very modest stipend to teach all levels of English. On Sundays, they attend training to improve their teaching skills. Volunteers visiting from abroad can be any age. No previous teaching experience is required. You may teach for one day or several days, rotating classrooms. It is informal and flexible to accommodate your travel schedule.
